After each lesson or group of lessons I will write the aims and a brief summary of what the lesson covered on the blog. There will also be links to useful websites and videos to help you revise throughout the year.
Exam questions and ideal exam answers will also be posted and you can answer the questions online.

Yr12 - UNICEF ways to descrease poverty.

The last few weeks we have been covering the following things.

  • Natural factors which influence the development of a country. (climate, landscape, natural disasters)
  • Cultural factors which influence the development of a country. (type of government, economic composition (primary, secondary and tertiary), social traditions and beliefs).
  • Ways in which we can reduce poverty and encourage the development of a country

Yr11 - Wellington Earthquake Fear

Interesting article on the cost and logistics of a possible future earthquake in Wellington. Lessons have been learnt from the Christchurch earthquake. Planners are considering how the main routes in and out of the city could become blocked following an earthquake and how they intend to prevent this from happening.

¡Natural Features: Features that occur naturally on the earth’s surface. They would still be there without people.

¡Cultural Features: These are features that are only present because of people. They are to do with people or are made by them.

Yr11 Map Work and IGIs


This week we have covered the following;
  • The Important Geographical Ideas or "IGI's".
  • Location, distance, change, pattern, process, perception, accessibility, system, culture, interaction and
  • Map Skills - use of an Atlas, map construction and interpretation. 
  • FACKTS - Frame, arrow, colour, key, title and scale. 
This video is a good introduction to topographic maps which we will be moving onto later next week.


Yr 12 - Development Inequalities

This week we have covered the following;

- To identify what we would need to survive and what we need to have a good standard of living.
- To describe and understand the spiritual model and the material model of development. (the way a country/culture develops)
 
Spiritual - To maintain a quality of life that protects the balance between material and spiritual needs. (To value friends, family, a fulfilling role in life over the amount of "stuff" we have.)
 
Material - To continually improve the standard of living and accumulate material wealth. (To earn as much money as possible and buy a big house and lots of things to go in it.)

- To identify the advantages and disadvantages of each model.

- To begin to define Developed and Developing.  

Developing - a country of region attempting to achieve the economy of a developed country.

Developed - a country or region that has a high standard of living based on a stable economy (the wealth and resources) with mature agricultural (farming), manufacturing (making things, factories), and tertiary (services, banking, shops) sectors.

 Some of you may want to watch the Teenage Affluenza video again. It illustrates nicely how sometimes we don't realise how lucky we are and hopefully makes us think about whether we really need all this "stuff" to have a decent standard of living.

Important Geographical Ideas - Yr12, Yr11

Aim - To identify and define the Important Geographical Ideas listed below.

Location - Where something is.
Distance - How far away something is.
Pattern - the arrangement of features in space. How close together or far apart they are or if they occur in a line or a circle.
Region - an area with at least one common feature.
Culture - a common way of life shared by one group of people.
Change - makes something different. Occurs in different places, times and rates.
Perception - peoples value's and culture alter the way they view and use their environment.
Accessibility - how easy it is to get to a place.
Interaction - a two way action that takes place in a cultural or natural environment.
System - a set of features linked together to form a whole.
Process - a sequence of related actions.
